The first freely accessible AI applications were released at the end of 2022. For some, they were just new tools, for others the potential end of reality as we knew it. As part of the “Experimental Communication” study project, the aim was to find our own stance on this development and investigate how artificial intelligence interprets reality and what falls by the wayside. The experimental set-up was simple: each person looked for a real kiosk in the area and documented its details. Who works there? What language is spoken? What is sold? Who are the regular customers? At the same time, ChatGPT and Midjourney were interviewed and commissioned to describe and visually depict a typical German kiosk. The comparison between the real and artificial worlds ultimately resulted in the SNACK:AI project - a deceptively real kiosk, designed with the most realistic illusion of reality that AI has to offer. Wallpaper instead of real shelves, endless music from AI generators, products from text prompts. Only the newspaper was real and dealt exclusively with artificial intelligence. As art director, I was responsible for the visual design in the area of space, animation and implementation with generative AI. The project was awarded gold at the ADC. An experience between fiction, deception and critical discourse.
